The area that should remain clear when the machine is operating is the operating radius of the forklift. This is crucial for ensuring both safety and efficient operation. The operating radius encompasses the space around the forklift where its movements can impact people, other equipment, or nearby structures. By keeping this area clear, operators can minimize the risk of accidents, such as collisions or crush injuries, which often occur if obstacles or individuals are present during the operation of the forklift.

In addition, a clear operating radius allows the operator to maneuver and lift loads without obstruction, ensuring that the forklift can perform its functions effectively and safely. It is a fundamental practice in the operation of all lifting equipment, which emphasizes the need for maintaining safe zones around moving machinery. Other areas such as the cab area, maintenance area, and storage area may have specific requirements for safety and organization, but they do not directly pertain to the operational safety standards associated with the active movements of the forklift.
